UV/LED Nail Lamps: How to Choose the Right One

Every gel product you own depends on one machine: the lamp. Under-power it and gel peels in days; get it right and three-week manicures become routine. Here's the short version of everything that matters.

Wattage in one paragraph

48W is the home baseline — cures all standard gel polish in 30–60 seconds. Planning polygel or builder gel? 54W+ prevents soft cores. Past ~90W you're paying for marketing, not curing power. Always choose dual UV+LED diodes: they cure every formula, old and new.

Features worth having

  • Diodes on the sides and back, not just the top — thumbs deserve full cures too
  • Timer presets + display (10/30/60/99s)
  • Motion sensor for hands-free starts
  • Low-heat mode if you have thin, sensitive nails
  • Removable base for pedicures and cleaning

Red flags

  • No wattage stated, or huge watts claimed with a dozen visible diodes
  • "Cures all gels in 10 seconds" — chemistry doesn't work that way
  • Mirror-finish interiors that flake within months

Signs of under-curing

Cloudy finish after the wipe, gel that dents hours later, color peeling in one rubbery sheet — that's the lamp, not the polish. It's the most common (and most fixable) problem in home gel.
